Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
