Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
