Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
