Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
