Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Next President.
Following a conclusive final ballot, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Built On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily focused on promises to tackle increasing violence and radically curb migration.
He repeatedly blamed foreigners, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the race, he issued an stern warning for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face deportation.
His plans featured controversial measures such as erecting holding facilities, high walls, security fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northernmost border.
Part of a Continental Trend
Numerous observers interpret Kast's win as part of a broader conservative trend in the region, coming after this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits also frame it as a part of the regular rotation of power between left and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Strong Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if various conservative parties are combined together.
This legislative landscape may hinder his agenda, such as a promise to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"We have numerous things about how a Kast administration will look like that are uncertain because he has not said the way he will achieve them," commented a political science professor.
The professor stated, "In terms of economic policy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts associated with the right. But where there is much less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
