Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.
